Last year we had a very successful Leadership Institute. Good leaders make great things happen and we did! And, arts leaders who survive, continue to sharpen their vision and strategic skills so we plan to do it again. Our capable Leadership Committee, under the direction of Dean Raymond Tymas-Jones, is making this next institute happen for you through an exciting summer opportunity for enhancing your management and leadership skills in a "think tank" environment that will be inspired by a dramatic mountain landscape of Utah. I want to encourage you to attend or support this Summer Leadership Institute and encourage your Associate and Assistant deans or department administrators to take advantage of this rare opportunity for advanced mentoring.
The ICFAD Leadership Institute will explore the tenets of effective leadership within the arena of the arts in higher education. This working conference is designed for sharing and exploring those key issues and advancement questions, such as: "Do fine arts leaders in academia face challenges that require special skills and knowledge? If so, what are these challenges and how can we prepare to meet them imaginatively?"
The institute is planned to gather a cohort of seasoned and newly appointed fine arts deans, department chairs, and school directors. The sessions will be interactive versus didactic, meaning each participant is essential to the design and focus of the institute. Our institute faculty will anchor the discussion with mini-lectures on the history and the philosophy of leadership in higher education. He plans to urge each participant to consider the chain of connections between his or her personal artistic vision, educational philosophy, and leadership aims and methods.
There will be ample time for networking with other attendees, perhaps leading to exchange opportunities. Summer is a time to pause to affirm visions or gain insights from your peers through group analysis of key issues and case studies. The institute will offer the chance to self-assess for career planning, sharpen your insights and stimulate personal goal setting and professional growth opportunities. It will be especially useful for new deans to foster a network of peers, advisors and mentors to promote career development and help individuals excel in new ways.
ICFAD is committed to fostering the highest standards in the profession, encouraging global understanding and cooperation, providing services to its members, and offering leadership development for the arts leaders in our a global society. For additional information about the conference schedule and topics and the ICFAD organization I encourage you to visit our web site: http://www.conferences.utah.edu/icfad/index.htm.
Again we will offer this Institute on the beautiful University of Utah campus guarantees a wonderful social experience as well. As president, I am most enthused about what this meeting offers both seasoned and new administrators, I plan to be there and hope to be able to interact with many of you.
